HELIX DESIGN INC [RESEARCH : CITY LIFE]

[KARLA CARROLL]

STOCKHOLM
A city littered with music and art, with new and exciting performances or exhibitions open weekly, this is the city of Stockholm. Thrilling nights, giving even the late night partier ample time to find their club of choice, most doesn’t close till 5am. A European city that never sleeps, with a night life very seldom found in other cities that can even come close to Stockholm’s.

Over the last fifteen years the gastronomic explosion or restaurant boon in Stockholm has given it an international nod for being one of the most assorted and tasteful cities of the world. Every pallet can be satisfied, whether it be traditional Swedish, or fusion leaving no one behind because Stockholm is melting pot of culinary creativity.

Music has been a strong point of Stockholm giving it global recognition. Concerts and events from the large to the intimate setting satisfy any audiophile’s needs. Year round live performances by international performers from every genre, classical to jazz, hip-hop to dance and death metal keep the clubs packed. Whatever the noise whatever music tugs at the strings in a persons’ heart, the clubs such as Berns, Nalen, Faching, Mosebake, and Debaser  will always have something new to experience: giving Stockholm the title of Cultural Capital of Scandinavia.

With a subway that acts more like an art gallery Stockholm has the “the world’s longest art gallery.” Literally everywhere street are is found in every direction, yet is concentrated in the underbelly of the city, under bridges, underground rail stations because street art in Stockholm tends to not last long in the open. Popular modern icons such as Hop Louie known for political stencils got his start in the streets of Stockholm only recently going main stream and now having not only his own website but exhibition. Artists and authorities clash heads on the ongoing debate that is street art. Is it art? Or is it Vandalism. No answers here, but what are the boundaries of freedom of speech and criminal damage. At the end of the day this tug of war match is about ownership of public domain.
